Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Rwanda's biggest and most pristine national parks, covering an area of approximately 1,019 square km (393 sq mi) located southwest of Rwanda. The park is a hidden gem in the middle of tea plantations and is stunning, with a vantage point of the picturesque views of the Virunga Mountains and Congo. Nyungwe National Park stretches from Lake Albert to Lake Tanganyika, which is covered by numerous lakes and mountains.

There are two groups of habituated chimpanzees: the smaller group of 30 located in the Cyamudongo area and the large group of 60 inside the forest. Nyungwe Park also has the most prominent black and white colobus monkey troops, and the Gisakura area has the second group of habituated colobus monkeys.

  • Chimpanzee & Primate Tracking:Nyungwe is famous for its large population of chimpanzees. Early morning treks are the best way to see them as they are most active then. The park also hosts 12 other primate species, including the endemic L'Hoest's monkey and large troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys. Colobus monkey trekking is a popular activity, and you can often find groups of over 400 individuals, making for a spectacular sight.
  • Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk:This is a must-do activity and the only one of its kind in East Africa. The 160-meter-long suspended bridge hangs 70 meters above the forest floor, offering a breathtaking aerial view of the canopy, a different perspective of the park's wildlife, and stunning views of the surrounding hills.
  • Hiking & Nature Trails Nyungwe has an extensive network of well-maintained hiking trails, totaling over 130 km. These trails lead to various waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and different forest habitats.
  • Bird watching: With over 320 species of birds, including 29 endemic to the Albertine Rift, Nyungwe is a birder's paradise. The diverse habitats, from montane forests to swamps, attract a wide variety of species. Some of the most sought-after birds include the Ruwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and the red-collared babbler.
  • Orchid and Butterfly Spotting: The park's rich biodiversity means you can find numerous species of orchids and butterflies.
  • Tea Plantation Tours: The area surrounding Nyungwe is known for its picturesque tea plantations, which you can tour to learn about the production process.
  • Congo-Nile Divide Trail: For experienced hikers, this multi-day trek follows the ridge that separates the Congo and Nile River basins.

Nyungwe Forest National Park Wildlife Experience

The park has amazing and breathtaking scenery and is a vantage point for picturesque views of the Virungas and the Congo. Nyungwe is nature at its very best. It is lush and beautifully green, often seen with cooling mists in the early mornings and late evening. A total of 86 mammal species have been recorded in Nyungwe National Park, though most are very secretive and rarely encountered. The primates, on the other hand, are Nyungwe’s main attraction, especially the charismatic chimpanzees. Another 12 primate species are present, including olive baboon, l'Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, Ruwenzori colobus, silver monkey and owl-faced monkey.

Tracking Nyungwe’s habituated chimpanzees is the prime activity in the park. Another highlight are the unusually large troops of Ruwenzori colobus, counting up to 600 individuals. This unique race of Angola colobus is restricted to the Albertine Rift. Antelope species in the park include the secretive bushbuck and the black-fronted duiker, which is commonly seen on the trails and even along the main road.

Nyungwe National Park can be visited all year round however the best time for game viewing is during the dry season that runs from June to September as the vegetation is thin offering clear views of the animals and many of the water sources have dried up which leads to most of the animals congregating around the few available sources of water.

How to get there

Nyungwe forest national park is located in South western Rwanda, close to the Lake Kivu and Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Burundi border in the south. It is located near Cyangugu town, about 225km and a 4-5 hour drive from Kigali. You can either drive to the park from Kigali, or fly there. You can’t walk there though, that would take an extraordinary amount of drive and time. With 225km to cover from Kigali to the Nyungwe forest, you will need a good functional car to make good time. You can either go by bus or hire a car in Rwanda.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a top birding destination in Rwanda. Over 300 bird species are recorded in the park, of which 27 are the Albertine Rift Endemics. The forest trails make it an accessible birding destination. Some of the birds include dusky crimson wing, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Kivu ground thrush, Neumann’s warbler, Albertine owlet, Ruwenzori batis, purple-breasted sunbird, handsome francolin, Ruwenzori Turaco, Ruwenzori nightjar, Kungwe Apalis, Archer’s ground robin, stripped breasted tit, dwarf honey guide, yellow-eyed black flycatcher, mountain masked apalis, red -collared babbler among others.
