    Karen Blixen Museum

    Karen Blixen Museum

    Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is a significant historical site in Nairobi, Kenya, and a must-visit for anyone interested in literature, colonial history, or the film "Out of Africa."

The museum is the former home of the famous Danish author Karen Blixen, who wrote the memoir "Out of Africa" under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen. She lived on the property, which was a coffee plantation at the foot of the Ngong Hills, from 1914 to 1931.

After her departure from Kenya, the house was sold. The Danish government later bought the house in 1963 and gifted it to the Kenyan government in 1964 as a tribute to their independence. Following the success of the 1985 Oscar-winning film "Out of Africa," based on her book, the house was opened as a museum in 1986.

The museum is the actual bungalow-style farmhouse where Karen Blixen lived. The rooms are arranged to reflect the colonial-era period and include some of her original furniture and personal belongings, such as her books and her famous typewriter.

Knowledgeable guides lead visitors through the house, sharing stories about Blixen's life, her relationships with the local community, and the challenges she faced while running the coffee farm. The Karen Blixen Museum is often visited as part of a half-day or full-day tour that includes other popular Nairobi attractions like the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre.

    A lesson in History

The main highlight is the house itself, a beautiful colonial bungalow built in 1912. The museum has preserved the home to reflect the colonial-era period, with rooms that contain some of Karen Blixen's original furniture and personal belongings. For fans of the book or the film - "Out of Africa", the museum is a pilgrimage site. It allows you to step directly into the world that Karen Blixen so vividly described in her memoir. Seeing the rooms, the views, and the objects she lived with makes the story feel tangible and personal.
