Mountain Gorilla Trekking:While Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is more famous for its gorillas, Mgahinga is a fantastic alternative. It is home to the trans-boundary "Nyakagezi" gorilla family, which has been fully habituated for tourism. The park's less dense vegetation can sometimes make for easier and clearer viewing opportunities compared to Bwindi. Trekking to find this family is a bucket-list experience, offering an hour to observe and photograph these magnificent primates.
Golden Monkey Trekking:Mgahinga is one of the only places in the world where you can see the endangered golden monkey in its natural habitat. These lively and beautiful primates, with their bright golden coats, are a joy to watch as they leap through the bamboo forests. The park offers both standard golden monkey trekking and a special "Golden Monkey Habituation Experience," which allows for a longer, more immersive encounter with a research team.
The Virunga Volcanoes: The park is dominated by three of the eight inactive volcanoes in the Virunga chain: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. These mountains offer incredible hiking opportunities with stunning scenery.

Batwa Cultural Trail: Before the park was established, it was the ancestral home of the Batwa Pygmies, a traditional hunter-gatherer people. The Batwa Trail is a unique cultural experience where a Batwa guide takes you on a walk through the forest, sharing their ancient knowledge of medicinal plants, hunting techniques, and survival skills. The tour culminates at the Garama Cave, a sacred site where the Batwa once lived and held their meetings.
Birdwatcher's Haven:Mgahinga is a top birding destination, with over 115 species recorded, including many Albertine Rift endemics. The park's different vegetation zones, from montane forests to bamboo belts and alpine moorlands, attract a wide variety of birds. Look out for the beautiful Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird.
The "Where Silver Meets Gold" Experience:Mgahinga is famously known as the place "where silver meets gold" because it's one of the few places in the world where you can track both the mountain gorillas (the "silver" for their silverback) and the golden monkeys ("gold"). This unique combination of two rare and endangered primates in a single park is a major draw for visitors.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Wildlife Experience

This stunning park with the three volcanoes gives the hiking enthusiasts an unforgettable experience. It is not as popular for mountain gorilla trekking as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Mgahinga has only one family of mountain gorillas tracked in this area. However, visitors also have chances of spotting buffalo and elephants. Others animals that can be seen in the forest include; giant forest hogs, bushbucks, leopards, spotted hyenas, black fronted duikers among others. It also has around 79 bird species. This only mountain gorilla family in this area, the Nykagezi gorilla family moves across the borders to Rwanda and DRC. It is therefore recommended to book permits on arrival to check where the family is. This is the most breathtaking activity done in the park, and it is only Nyakagezi gorilla group that is tracked here. Mountain gorilla trekking requires that you are physically fit since it’s quite challenging moving in the forest, valleys and the steep slopes. As you move through the forests you will hear the sound of birds in the tree, monkeys, and other animals, something memorable!

The Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be visited all year round. Its pleasant climate makes almost every adventure activity possible throughout the year. Gorilla trekking is a year-round adventure, however, visitors prefer to come during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September because this is when the hiking trails are less slippery and muddy. The only downside is that though hiking conditions tend to be favorable, this season does not offer clear views because of the hazier air associated with the dry season. The Wet season from April to May and October to November is not preferred due to the unfavourable tracking conditions. The trails tend to be slippery and muddy, making tracking challenging. Because of mist and hailstorms during this season it is challenging to sight wildlife and birds from a far distance. This season however offers clearer views than in the dry seasons because after the rains, the clouds disappear, the mist lifts and the air becomes clear. The scenery is breathtaking and vegetation lush and green.

How to get there

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is situated in far south western Uganda. It’s situated in 510km from Kampala; the most commonly used route passes through Kabale and Kisoro districts. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be reached in 8 hours on good tarmac. Its then a further 76km to Kisoro town on a mountainous tarmac road with steep ascents and descents. Ntebeko, the main entrance to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is 14km from Kisoro at the end of a dirt road with some steep and rocky sections.

Mahinga Gorilla Park is one of the top birding spots in Uganda. Birding in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park gives you an opportunity to spot about 100 bird species in the montone forests, bamboo forests, swamps and gorges found in the volcanoes Sabinyo and Gahinga. A local bird guide will take you out to look out for species like the Archer’s Robin-Chat, Banded Prinia, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, Black kite, Blue-headed Coucal, Blue-headed Sunbird, Bronze, Cape Robin-chat, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Collared Apalis, Doherty’s Bush-shrike, Double-collared sunbird, Dusky Crimsonwing, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, Dusky Turtle Dove, Equatorial Akalat, Fire finch, Grauer’s Warbler, Grey capped warbler, Handsome Francolin, Kivu Ground Thrush, Lagden’s Bush Shrike, Mackinnon’s Fiscal, Montane Oriole, Mountain Masked Apalis, Olive pigeon, Olive Thrush, Olive woodpecker, Paradise Flycatcher, Pin-tailed whydah, Red-throated Alethe, Regal Sunbird, Rwenzori Batis, Rwenzori night jar, Rwenzori Turaco, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Speckled Mouse Bird, Strange Weaver, Strip-breasted Tit, Waxbills, White necked raven, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, White-starred Robin, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher and Yellow-vented bulbul among other.
