Impressive Habitat:The park's landscape is its most striking feature. It is a vast, semi-arid savannah that is enclosed by mountains and rocky outcrops, creating a dramatic and beautiful backdrop. The scenery is often compared to Kenya's Maasai Mara but with a more rugged and wild feel. The park's main feature is the Narus Valley, a lush, rolling grassland that serves as the park's primary game-viewing area due to its permanent water sources.
Wildlife Diversity:Kidepo is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including many species not found anywhere else in Uganda. The park has over 80 species of mammals, with at least 28 unique to the area.
The Narus Valley: This is the heart of the park's wildlife viewing. Unlike the seasonal Kidepo River, the Narus Valley has permanent water sources, which draw a high concentration of animals during the dry season. The game tracks and open plains in this area make for excellent game drives where you can easily spot predators and large herds of herbivores.

Karamojong: You can visit a traditional Karamojong village (manyatta) to learn about their semi-nomadic pastoralist lifestyle, unique customs, and vibrant culture, which is similar to that of the Maasai.
Birdwatcher's Haven:Kidepo is a top destination for birding in Uganda, with over 475 recorded species. Its unique habitat, which includes a mix of semi-arid and savanna ecosystems, attracts a variety of avian life, including many that are endemic to the region.
Guided Nature Walks:Guided Nature Walks: Take a walking safari to explore the park on foot, focusing on the smaller details of the ecosystem and enjoying up-close encounters with some animals under the guidance of an armed ranger.

Kidepo Valley National Park Wildlife Experience

Kidepo is home to 77 mammal species and the park offers great opportunities for game viewing. 20 species of predator are present, including lion, leopard, and spotted hyena. In Uganda, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, cheetah, and caracal are endemic to Kidepo. The elephant population is over 650 (up from 200 in the mid ‘90s), buffalo are estimated to exceed 10,000, and there are over 50 Rothschild’s giraffes, an internationally important population. Zebra graze on the plains and both greater and lesser kudu roam around the thick bush. Fortunate adventurers may even see a white-eared kob, more commonly seen in South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Best time to visit
The Kidepo Valley National Park

The dry season from June to September and mid-December to Early March is the best time to Visit the park. Being in a semi-arid area, the Narus Valley is the only place that has water even in the dry season as major seasonal rivers dry out. The dry river beds can easily be crossed during the dry season. Safari experiences are possible during the wet season as well but can be interrupted by the rains and occasional flooding. The rains sometimes temporarily cut off some areas especially when the dry river beds that are crossed by vehicles fill up.

How to get there

The park can be accessed by road and air transport. Since it is the most isolated national park in Uganda, It takes a 9 to 10-hour drive to get there if coming from Kampala Uganda’s capital city. The drive is however through the beautiful Ugandan countryside which is quite a sight to see. In case you don’t have a long drive then you directly fly to the Park’s Pakuba airstrip located in the centre of the park. There are scheduled flights from Entebbe organized by domestic flight operators like Aerolink.

Kidepo Valley National Park Birdlife

Bird watching in Kidepo Valley National Park is the second destination after Queen Elizabeth National Park. A prevalent activity in the park, over 475 bird species have been recorded, which comprises migratory endemic and forest birds. The top areas for birding are around the Apoka Rest Camp, the fringes of Narus Valley and Namakwenyi Valley. For the best experience, morning or evening times are the best with the company of an experienced and knowledgeable guide. Some of the birds include the Egyptian Vulture, Kori bustard, ostrich, red-billed oxpecker, pygmy falcon, white-bellied go-away bird, rufous chatterer, Abyssinian scimitar bill, black-breasted barbet, verreauxs eagle, Ethiopian swallow, Jackson’s hornbill, black coucal, superb starling, chestnut weaver, golden pipit, rose-ringed parakeet, dark chanting goshawk, red and yellow barbet among others.
