    FAQs

    1. When is the best time to go on an African safari?

Kenya is truly a year-round travel destination for safari you will find that is perfect for that time of the year. Dry season is the best time for game-viewing and this takes place at slightly different times in different parks of Kenya. The dry season is generally from Julythrough October, “long rains”, between April and early June and the “short rains”during November and early December. Weather patterns are keep changing and sometimes the rains fail completely in some parts of Kenya. It’s practical for travelers to think in terms of wet and dry seasons instead and to consider the elevation of the region they are visiting. The wildebeest migration moves into the Mara between July and October and this is when many visitors come to Kenya and the parks can get more crowded with tourist vehicles.

    - January to March: Usually hot and dry and great for wildlife viewing.

    - April-May: Can be wet and muddy.

    - June: Green and lush after the rains.

    - Jul-August: Cooler but good for the migration in the Mara.

    - September-October: Good weather and good wildlife viewing.

    - November-December: The short rains.

Please keep in mind that so it is essential that you book well in advance during these months.

    2. What kind of accommodations are available?

Kenya offers a broad spectrum of accommodations:

Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en suite bathrooms. They are comfortably furnished with all the facilities normally associated with a 3 star hotel.

Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en suite facilities with showers, flush toilets and hot and cold running water, like a hotel bathroom.

Boutique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor, often with very spacious rooms and even going so far in some cases as having plunge pools for each room.

Eco-camps and smaller tented camps have insect-proof tents with en suite facilities including safari shower and flush toilets. They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag!

    3. How much does an African safari cost?

It depends on so many factors impact the price—time of year, in-country travel via plane or Land Cruiser, lodging preferences, add-ons and excursions, etc. As a rough estimate, before even starting a conversation, imagine that a custom crafted experience with Complete Safaris could run between $800-1200 per person per day.

Mid-range safari: USD $800 – $1,000 per person per night might be realistic in many cases.

Luxury safari (premium lodges, fly-in transfers, private guides): costs can be USD $1,400 – $2,600+ per person per night.

Always ask what’s included (Accommodation, meals, Transport, park fees, transfers, guide game drives, drinks) to avoid surprises.

    4. When is the Great Migration in East Africa?

The Great Migration is a continuous, year-long event with wildebeest, zebra and antelope moving through Kenya and Tanzania in their search for food and water. Regardless of when you travel to these countries in East Africa, you will encounter great herds, big cats, all members of the Big Five, and colourful birds. Lions and elephants, are favourites among throughout the year on the African plains.

The migrating herds enter Kenya for a much shorter period, roughly from July or August until October – though recent years have seen major arrivals as early as June, and late-stayers still in the Maasai Mara region until November or even later.

    5. What animals can i expect to see on safari?

In most parks / conservancies you can normally guarantee you to see the more common grazing animals such as buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, eland, giraffe, gazelles, impala and waterbuck. In addition, the big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) are present in most parks, but are most easily seen in the Masai Mara and the Mara Conservancies. Elephants are best seen in Amboseli and Rhinoes are often sighted in Nairobi National Park, OlPejeta Conservancy and Lake Nakuru Park.

    6. In what type of vehicle will i have game drives?

On fly-in (air) safari your safari game drives will be operated by your chosen camp / lodge. Various types of vehicles are used for game drives, accommodation uses. The game drives may be shared with other guests – typically maximum 6 per vehicle – and there may be the option to upgrade to a private vehicle.

On a road safari in Kenya, you can choose between a 6 seater safari minivan or a closed-sided 4×4 LandCruiser Jeep – both vehicles have pop-up roofs giving passengers great view on game drives and an excellent photographic opportunity. We always recommend a 4×4 safari Jeep in preference to the vans – it is worth the extra cost to be in a real safari vehicle and not in the safari vans favoured by some to cut-safari our price.

    7. Is there access to Wi-Fi or internet access?

Wi-Fi / internet is available for guests and this is being introduced by many and more camps and Lodges nowadays. Most major hotels in Nairobi and on the coast town have internet free of charge to guests

    8. Is there power to charge a phone, camera, video camera, laptop or iPad?

Yes, the camps and lodges have power – perhaps as solar lighting or a generator. Your charger must be 220 – voltage. The required adaptor plugs are included in most international travel adaptor kits. For Kenya it is plug type G (the British-style 3 rectangular pin plug).
